Left over in Mind- School Memories
Time seems to have augmented its pace as I look back. I know
we have gone through a long journey at school but, school days now seems to
have passes in a blinking of eyes. Yesterday we were typical school students
with great enthusiasm and reluctance at time when we would count on the year
left for completing school. And now, since it’s the time to head off the
school, how we realize that time seems to have cheated us!
I still remember the night when I had no sound sleep just to
complete the homework. Friends would call to know if I had finished my work.
Those were the time we would gossip about being tones of homework. Today as I
remind myself of those days, I don’t think it was that bad for all. When other
family member are sleeping, you are still moving your pen and suddenly you feel
like you can do something more! It sounds weird; I know, but that’s what my experience tells me. Not
to forget how my swollen eyes would catch other’s eyes the next day and along
came their queries. “No, I am fine”, I would reply with a smile.
Whenever there were some kind of mischief and prank in the
classroom, every burst into laughter. Inevitably, one of the teachers passing
by or in the nearby department would show up and we would get scolded. But, it
was for your own good, teachers’ words were no harsh word of fury but words of
suggestion for the betterment of student. Pondering over such incidents, I now
realize my memories would taste incomplete without those prank occurring in
class; at least I have a reason to smile as I recall them.
And of course! We had classroom singers! Especially during
leisure period and lunch break, they would all of sudden, have that superstar
attitude banding the desk and singing in an insane way. There were someone who
would be daydreaming and some of them would be snoozing during lectures. Each
person has his/her own world, indeed!
Turning back the pages to my personal experiences at school,
I find myself in the horror stories of the building of the hostel and those
school building. Some horror stories about the areas were in air, moving from
ear to ear. My ears have been fed with such stories but, being kid it wasn’t
that easy to convince our delicate hearts and I even use to see terrifying
dreams about the same; may be it was some psychological effect on my mind. And
guess what? For two or three days, we did hear voice screaming, the scream
almost took my breath away. Was that building really haunted? Hey! Don’t get
scared! It wasn’t any sort of ghost or spirit; the voice belonged to a group of
college pranksters and they got scolded for their stupid pranks.
Course book, home assignments, test, extracurricular activities were always there to keep me busy.
But no, be it irregularly, I was tempted to visit the school library, pick up
some books and indulge in a new world. This was something my mother abhorred. A
novel in my hand was an issue big enough to raise her temper. ‘Leaving these
bulky books for a next time’ Take some rest instead. Staring your eyes just to
know some imaginary stories is in my ear. I wonder when that precise next time
will come. I have managed to read quite number of them though. Concealing novel
with blanket, I would read late night.
I remember how impatient! I was to have the chapter “The
open window” (Gulmohar, grade 8) taught.
The classes as expected, were very interesting; the story
still tops my favorites’ list. I won’t ever forget the exhilarating history
classes which were no less than a theater, puncturing the well-known linkage of
history and yawns. Some boys who never learnt to keep their hands tied have
irritated teacher a lot. I won’t ever forget one particular teacher who has
been harsh to them though warning them of their wrong track.
Ah! Now here we are in college, a different environment,
different thoughts, and different determinations! Anyways a number of years
down the line , memories of school will remain with me forever, as the only
left over of school in mind, not that mean I am excluding the education my
school has given me!
